Cubalaya:
The Cubalaya is a medium sized, multipurpose, pea-combed chicken that finds its origin in Cuba. They were accepted by the Asociacion Nacional de Avicultura Cuban National Poultry Association)in 1935 and shortly after namely in 1936 they were introduced into the US. The rooster weighs about 6 Lbs (2.7 kg) and the hen about 4 Lbs (1.8 kg).
Cubalayas come in various colors but the black breasted red is the most common rooster color and the wheaten the most common hen color. They produce great quality meat and they lay tinted eggs (cream colored eggs). The cubalaya rooster is distinguished by not having any spurs, which means that two roosters fighting for dominance can't hurt eachother as bad. They are very friendly birds infact chics have been known to purch and eat out of peoples hands shortly after they hatched.
Cubalayas are characterized by their stately carriage; pea comb; abundant, flowing hackle feathers and long, well-spread tail carried about 20 degrees below the horizontal. They possess a friendly, curious disposition, are very heat tolerant and make excellent foragers when allowed to range. The hens lay small eggs and are good brooders.
