New Zealand Rabbits are despite the name, American in origin. They were
first bred in 1916 by W.S. Preshaw. They were bread for meat and for fur. They have large, broad
muscular bodies. Bucks weigh between 8-10 pounds, while the does between 9-12 pounds. Does are
distinguished by their grater size and the presence of a dewlap, which is a flap of fur below the chin
that is pulled for a nesting box during pregnancies. They come in 3 colors, black, red
and white. The white rabbits have a genetic deviation called albinism, it causes them to have bright
red eyes. Albinism is caused by a lack of melanin, which is pigment that gives everyone, including
humans, their skin/fur/hair/eye color.
