We definitely needed more space so we compared prices on cabinet incubators and found that they were
expensive. When we were about ready to go out and invest in a cabinet incubator our refrigerator
turned into a heating cabinet instead of a cooling cabinet. So we had to spend our savings on a new
refrigerator but we also still needed more incubator space. The heating refrigerator sparked the idea
of using the old refrigerator as an incubator and we have had great success with it.
Before we started we went online and did some research and found some plans for a cabinet incubator
that the University of Illinois had put out on the net.
We used theire plans and some other plans for
other incubators made out of coolers to give us ideas to get started and modified them to fit the
refrigerator.
You may have parts you can use lying around the house if not you can get most of them on EBay or
at your local hardware store.
We ran about a 2 week test on it to test humidity and how well it heated up different areas of the
refrigerator, before ever adding the first eggs. We also tested different heat sources and configurations
before we finally decided on the finished product which we believe is a really great setup.
With the setup that we have we maintain a 90 - 95% hatch rate.
All of the eggs that we hatch and raise are listed on the American Livestock Conservancy list
either as critical, threatened or are on the watch list so every egg matters.
