Egg Layers:
We currently have Barred Plymouth Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Black Australorps,
Rhode Island Reds and some other unknown chicks running around our egg layer
pen. Some of them are from this years hatch. All the Australorps and Buff's are from
last years hatch. Some of the Barred Rocks, Rhode Islands are from last summer, some are older and some
are from this year. The mystery chicks are all from this years hatch. We try to make sure all of our egg
layers are brown egg layers.
The Barred Rock and the Rhode Island Red are an American bird, the Buff Orpington
is an English and the Black Australorp is an Australian Orpington breed. All
the breeds are very good egg layers, especially the Rhode Island Red and the
Australorp. All the breeds are easy to tame. Though someone forgot to mention
that to Buster our rooster, he absolutely loves to sneak up on you when you
least expect it.
We do not sell our chickens for consumption, but we do use them in our own kitchen.
While we do not often hatch any of the eggs from our egg layers, we have done so a few times.
The little fellow on the picture to the left is one of those hatchlings. The hatchling is a mix between
our Buff Orpington Rooster and a hen we have that is half Australorp and half Barred Rock.
